Taking a virtual tour

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

Evolution of mobile phonesA friend of mine recently moved into a new house. She lives quite a few states away so it will be a little while before I get the chance to go see her, but I was anxious to see her new place. Since teleports have yet to be invented, we planned an evening to have a little video chat via tablet.

At the agreed upon time, we both booted up our iPads, she propped “me” up on her new kitchen island and even poured a glass of celebratory champagne for me (sadly, you can’t send cocktails through the internet yet. Science really needs to get on this stuff.) then she picked me up and took me on a tour of her place. While I was looking around, it hit me what an amazing thing we were doing. Can you imagine fifteen years ago carrying around a tablet that was showing a live video, with sound, on a lightweight device on a wireless network? It was something we saw on The Jetsons that is now a reality.

If you stop and think about all the things we can do that were not even imagined 25 years ago, it is stunning. Smartphones, tiny sticks that hold gigs of data, video chats with people all over the world, GPS devices that tell you how to get to some far off destination. We (ok, I) take much of this for granted, but when I really think about it I am in awe.

What piece of technology has wowed you the most? What can you not imagine living without now that you have it?

It’s the little things.

rustic cabinAs I mentioned on my post over at The Goddess Blogs, I’m currently on “vacation” with my family. Accommodations are not quite what we were expecting and, as a result, caused some stress – and some giggles.

We take it for granted that we can now research things on the Internet and find out about those quaint little places in vacation spots with an accuracy that people have not had before so it amazes me when I get surprised by things not being quite what was expected.

So now while I sit in McDonald’s using their glorious wi-fi and drinking the most necessary of all beverages, coffee, I started thinking a bit about the little day to day things we have come to rely on. Like coffee. And wi-fi.

Have we become too soft with all these modern conveniences? Probably. I’m ok with that.

So what little things have you come to depend on or expect? In addition to the above, I am going to go with a level bed (yeah, back to the fun of the cabin) and a hot shower with enough room to move your arms and legs comfortably.

It’s the little things that can make or break a day.

Taking a little mental break

Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

One of the things I love most about the Internet is that at any moment, I can do a search and take a “tour” of some far off land. I love the tourism videos and photo galleries people have put together that let us go on beautiful journeys from our seats.

Today, I wanted to visit Scotland. (I know, shocking.) and found these lovely drives through Scotland. Perfect for a little mental getaway.

Where would you like to go on your own mental break?

Naming storms

Friday, February 8th, 2013

I am sitting here watching the news about the big winter storm that is moving toward the east coast. They have decided to call it Nemo.

Now, before a certain animated film with an adorable little clown fish came into our lives, there was another Nemo that would come to mind when the name was mentioned: Captain Nemo from the Jules Verne classic Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. This man was mysterious, rebellious and way beyond his time in terms of his technology and ideas. In other words, he was a little more menacing than our adorable little friend from Finding Nemo.

I wonder which Nemo The Weather Channel was thinking of when they picked the name? And do you think it occurred to them that they might be starting a new meme with angry little clown fish images?

For those of you in Nemo’s path – stay warm!

The temptation of technology

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

As per usual lately, I am under deadline and find myself prone to finding anything and everything to distract myself.

It’s my process.

At least that’s what I tell myself.

Anyway, Hot Cop bought an iPad mini for Christmas and I’ve been doing research on the app store for things that will help me play be more productive. So far, I have found a game word formation tool that lets me and my friends compete develop our vocabularies and score points. I have also found another app where I can breed and grow my own dragons research foreign lands.

It’s understandable with all these games productivity applications, I can become easily distracted by all this technology.

So while I put my nose back into my manuscript, do you have any cool games and apps productivity tools that you’ve discovered?

The mouse and the elephant

Wednesday, January 9th, 2013

You’ve seen those cartoons where the big elephant is up on a table, quaking in fear because a little mouse is on the floor? It’s rather funny until you think about how many teeny little things strike terror in the hearts of much bigger things.

What brought this to mind? A few things: first, a little eight legged beast that may or may not have reduced me to a squealing little girl. Ok, so that might be a slight exaggeration, but you get the idea. The second was our rescue dog Po was getting into the trash. I decided to try to use something that frightens him as a deterrent: the bottle of ear drops.

Surprisingly, it worked! This big, bag 85 lb is terrified of this little bottle of ear drops.

The elephant and the mouse, a human and a spider, a dog and ear drops.

Do you have a little thing that will make you freeze in your tracks?

My Resolutions for 2013

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

Every year, I try to set some “goals” for myself. I don’t like to call them resolutions because that makes me think of something more formal and official which will just make me rebel.

So after much deliberation and soul searching, here is The List.

• Lose 12 lbs. I lost 7 this year and I think they’re lonely and need company. 12 more of them should make for a happy little party wherever pounds go once they leave their humans.

• Use my work time more efficiently. This means no more HGTV while I should be writing or editing. It will help me concentrate better and also prevent phrases like “room aesthetic” or “the counters weren’t granite” into a Regency-set story.

• Debut my new website re-design. Yes, it is being redesigned and I can’t wait to show it to everyone! When? I’m not sure yet, I’ll probably have a better idea once I fully implement the previous goal.

• Meet Hugh Jackman. Yes, this IS on my list every year.

• Try not to get any more obsessed with Downton Abbey than I already am. I’ll admit it, I’m a junkie for it. Darn that BBC for their fabulous programming!

What about you? Do you set goals for the new year?

The year in review

Friday, December 28th, 2012

Before thinking about New Year’s Resolutions, I like to take a few minutes between the holidays to ponder the year. Here are some great things about 2012:

I lost 7 lbs (and hope I won’t find them again any time soon)

I shared another awesome year with Hot Cop

Seeing my daughter accepted to Sarah Lawrence College

Watching my son win Rookie of the Year at the Skip Barber Summer Series!

I finished my Regency Indiana Jones homage with The Taming of a Scottish Princess, followed by a return to my Regency historical romantic comedy roots with the Duchess Diaries and spending three weeks on the NYT list, and two weeks on the extended list (squeeee!)

Some of my author friends and I got together to launch Lunch Hour Love Stories and I released my first self published co-authored short story, too.

Wow, when I think about it, it was a darn great year!

What great things happened in your life in 2012?

Buy More Stuff, Black Friday 2010

Black Friday is coming. Every year, I look at the sales and deals and, I’ll admit, I’m tempted.

Then I remember that I would have to get up at 1 am, get dressed and make my way over to the mall/store/strip center and brave the crowds of fellow Black Friday shoppers. There will be lots of parking drama and who knows if the coffee shops are open that early for my morning fix…

Needless to say, I usually find my bed is too comfortable to leave and I can live with missing out on a few deals – and the crowds – in order to get some more sleep.

So, in honor of you brave (perhaps crazy) souls heading out on Black Friday, I am going to give away a goodie box of books! There are two steps to be in the drawing:

1.     Sign up for my newsletter.

2.     Tell me your best or worst Black Friday stories in the comments below!

(open to US residents only, drawing will be held Wednesday, November 21, 2012)
